We think that when you arrive in Haloze you may not want to wander far, but in case you do we are ideally located
for many possible day trips both in Slovenia and and to the nearby countries Hungary, Croatia and Austria.
Here are just a few examples.
In Slovenia;
Only 20 minutes from the house will bring you to the oldest town in Slovenia town, Ptuj. This lovely old town has 2000 years of history with its romanesque and medieval architecture. Strolling through the old town it's easy to feel a connection with an age long past. But it's a town for people of all ages and tastes with many cafe/bars, resturants and and a large variety of shops and supermarkets. Ptuj also has the largest Terme (thermal spar and water park). The river Drava runs along the southern outskirts of the town and from Ptuj castle you will see the hills of Haloze in the distance. As well as a good selection of local organised recreational activities, hiking and cycling are very popular throughout Slovenia with many choices of mapped routes( and we can supply you bikes). The Ptuj Lake is the largest artificial lake in Slovenia. Ptuj is a partner town with Maribor for European Capital of Culture of 2012.Both towns will host events throughout the year.
Maribor is the second largest town in Slovenia - 30 minutes drive from the house.
Celje, in the Savinjske region - 40 minutes drive.
It was originally a celtic town built where two rivers meet and is a gateway to the heart of the Kamniške-Savinjske Alps,
where can be found Logarska dolina noted as one of the most beautiful alpine valleys in the whole of Europe.
Celje Old Castle is well worth a visit, especially during one of the many events held there during the year.
Ljubljana, the capital - 1hr 30mins drive.
Because of tis architectural beauty, Ljubljana is still considered to be a hidden gem of Europe. Its has a picturesque castle
with views and the river Ljubljanica, with attractive bridges and old embankments, passes through the centre. There are many
bars and a Sunday market along the embankment. Like any capital there are many sites, activities and entertainments for all.
Note, that Slovenia has a reliable and economical rail network and all the above are easily accessed by train from Ptuj.
Croatia -Literally 10 minutes drive to the border - (you will need your passports).

Its a walkers paradise, where you can explore virtually all of the main architectural and religious sites by foot plus a nice

for baroque music with events organised through September.
Can't say we've experienced it but apparently the nightlife in the city is something else.
Croatia's Plitvice Lakes National Park - around 2 hours and a half drive
Its jaw dropping and not to be missed! (We've been 3 times). Its aptly known as the 'fallen lakes', with seemingly endless
cascading water falls. There are boardered walks and a pretty boat trip from one section to another. Take a picnic.
Austria
Graz is about 80 minutes drive. This is the second largest city in Austria with an architectural centre dating back to
the 13th century and has been a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site since 1999. With an extensive shopping area,
many resturants and an extensive events calender, it is well worth a trip. Also easily accessible by train.
Klagenfurt is about 2 and half hours drive.
It is located on the eastern edge of Lake Wörthersee and is known as the 'Rose of Lake Wörthersee'. A very popular holday
destination for Austrians offering a huge number sporting and recreation activities as well as regional food and night entertainment.
Klagenfurt has an international airport (good prices) and it might be worth considering it as your entry point into Slovenia and as your first
or final visit.
Hungary - about 1 hour to Lendava in Slovenia, just on the Hungarian border.
Lenti is a small relaxed town just alittle further inside Hungary with history dating back to medeival times. Its noted for its Thermal bath
and St George Energy park and famous throughout europe for its medicinal water used in treating skeletal disorders.
Lenti is a gateway to Hungary should you want to explore further.
Most of our suggestions here are from our own experience of visits and of course you can find many websites with much more
