Extenuating Circumstances Policy

Our Approach


Reservations are commitments between guests and hosts. While unexpected events can occur, they do not automatically entitle either party to cancel outside the terms of the applicable cancellation policy.


Connecting Rentals maintains a limited Extenuating Circumstances Policy for rare, extraordinary, and unforeseeable events that make it impossible—not merely inconvenient—to complete a reservation.


This policy is intended to be applied sparingly. Approval is uncommon and is granted only when Connecting Rentals determines, in its sole discretion, that the circumstances meet the requirements of this policy.


Circumstances That May Qualify


Examples of situations that may qualify include:


  1. Government-ordered evacuations affecting the property.
  2. Government-imposed travel restrictions that legally prevent travel to or occupancy of the property.
  3. Natural disasters that render the property unsafe or inaccessible.
  4. Severe damage or utility failure that makes the property uninhabitable.
  5. Other extraordinary events that Connecting Rentals determines make fulfillment of the reservation impossible.


Qualification under this policy is determined on a case-by-case basis and is not guaranteed.


Circumstances That Generally Do Not Qualify


The following situations generally do not qualify for an exception:


  1. Changes in travel plans.
  2. Personal illness, injury, or medical conditions.
  3. Family emergencies.
  4. Work, military, or school obligations.
  5. Transportation delays or airline cancellations.
  6. Traffic, weather delays, or road conditions that do not make the property inaccessible.
  7. Financial hardship.
  8. Changes in personal preferences.
  9. Finding another accommodation.
  10. Concerns about weather forecasts when the property remains accessible.
  11. Events, attractions, or activities being canceled.
  12. Dissatisfaction with a property's location, neighborhood, amenities, or appearance when accurately represented in the listing.
  13. Any circumstance that was known or reasonably foreseeable at the time the reservation was made.


Requesting an Exception


Requests must be submitted as soon as reasonably possible after the qualifying event occurs.


Connecting Rentals may request supporting documentation before making a determination. Failure to provide requested documentation may result in denial of the request.


Submitting documentation does not guarantee approval.


Effect on Cancellation Policies


If Connecting Rentals determines that this policy applies, we may modify or waive the reservation's cancellation policy as appropriate under the circumstances.


If this policy does not apply, the reservation remains subject to the cancellation policy selected by the host at the time of booking.


Travel Insurance


Unexpected events can happen to anyone. Because most personal emergencies are not covered under this policy, Connecting Rentals strongly encourages guests to purchase travel insurance before their trip.


Depending on the policy selected, travel insurance may provide coverage for:


  1. Trip cancellations or interruptions.
  2. Covered medical emergencies.
  3. Travel delays.
  4. Lost or delayed baggage.
  5. Other covered travel-related losses.


Guests should carefully review any policy's terms, exclusions, and eligibility requirements before purchasing coverage.
