As a former convent, L’Ancien Couvent was home to the nuns of the region for many years. The Convent shielded many Resistance fighters during World War II and a monument to the young men and women of the village who were killed by the Germans on one day in 1944 can be seen up by the church.
The house retains its original features and charm and has been lovingly renovated to the highest standards inside to provide a modern, spacious and luxurious living space.
Sit by the original fireplace - use the original stone sink used by the nuns - walk on the original stone floors. Nothing has been spared and the finish is superb.
With three large bedrooms and two bathrooms, the house can easily accommodate six people in total luxury. Downstairs has the enormous open-plan kitchen/diner and the large spacious living has a flat screen TV with UK satellite channels.
The large traditional French doors and windows bring a warm glow throughout the property, which also has central heating for the cooler months.
Up the beautifully restored staircase, the rooms are all tastefully decorated with only the very best linen and quality duvets and pillows. Everything has been thought of to make your stay as comfortable as possible, but if you really appreciate bespoke furniture and great art, then this is the property for you - a home away from home you'll never want to leave!
There is ample private parking behind the original metal gate into a totally private mature garden with trees and shrubs. There is an outdoor dining area which sits below an electric awning to shelter you from the midday sun. There is also WiFi throughout, but why not just sit back and relax and take it all in instead.
Situated in the heart of the pretty village of Frayssinet-le-Gelat in the Lot, The Old Convent rests in the shadow of a beautiful stone church. The village boasts two restaurants, an excellent bakers and mini supermarket. The honey-coloured stone makes the buildings glow even in the winter and it is within easy reach of both the Lot and Dordogne Rivers. From here you can explore the enormous selection of ancient monuments, world famous caves (e.g. Lascaux and Pech Merle), and countless Chateaux (e.g. Château de Beynac, Château de Castelnaud & Les Chateau Milandes).
Many of the most beautiful villages of France are located in the region including St Cirq Lapopie, La Roque Gageac, Rocamadour, and Domme and you'll also be spoiled for choice when it comes to the local cuisine which is famous for it's duck, wine, truffles and walnuts.
Both the Lot and Dordogne are fantastic places to explore for all ages with canoeing being the most popular past time. There are also many larger boats taking people further along the river where you'll be able to marvel in the sheer limestone cliff faces, unspoiled countryside and huge variety of wild animals including deer, boar, and many birds of prey.
In Spring the verges and river banks are covered in wild orchids of every colour and in May the poppies cover large areas. Move on to summer and these are replaced by fields of sunflowers or maize and then the incredible colours of Autumn have to be seen to be believed. The bronzed oak leaves can be seen for miles.
There is also a downstairs toilet, central heating and constant hot water. Upstairs: The landing features a small writing desk and the entire first floor has been furnished with pure wool carpets for ultimate comfort.
Pool and Gardens: Outside there is a large private heated swimming pool (12m x 6m) with Roman steps and non slip surrounds. There is also a fully operational barbecue.
The enclosed walled garden and terrace is well maintained with abundant honeysuckle creepers and mature plants. There is a large outdoor dining table, plenty of chairs, and sun loungers. There is also an electronically operated awning for shade.
So whether you're in to your history, gardens, water sports, gastronomy or just sitting by a pool, you will not be short of things to do while staying in this uniquely beautiful and comfortable property.
